Workshop 1 - 2:00 PM - 3:35 PM
2:00 PM - 3:35 PM
Biotechnology plays an essential and significant role for the delivery of EU goals for competitive, healthy, resilient and sustainable economies and societies. Applications are integrated throughout our industrial and social ecosystems, including the medicines that create and sustain a healthy society, agri-food supply chains, manufacturing processes, plus biomanufacturing of chemicals and consumer goods.
The European Commission Communication “Building the future with nature: Boosting Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing in the EU” which was published in March 2024 includes a streamlining regulatory study which will be assessing current regulatory obstacles for biotech innovations to reach the market. This study lays the ground for the EU Biotech Act and other initiatives announced in President Ursula Von der Layen in her political guidelines for the new Commission.
This workshop will focus on discussing the solutions for the overall improvement of product approval processes, including the use of innovative tools such as regulatory sandboxes and resolving the current regulatory challenges experienced by the fermentation industry. This workshop will contribute to the APROVALS project and EuropaBio EFIB statement 2025 which will be published after Bioket.

Guest Speakers

From flask to factory: High-Throughput Strategies for Rapid BioProcess Development
Tiphaine Clément
Head of Fermentation Platform | TWB
Fermentation is at the heart of bioprocessing, driving the production of biopharmaceuticals, biofuels, and industrial enzymes. However, optimizing fermentation conditions—such as strain selection, media composition, and process parameters—can be a time-consuming and resource-intensive endeavor. Traditional approaches often rely on low-throughput experiments that limit the speed of innovation.
By integrating robotics, microfluidics, and advanced data analytics, high-throughput workflows allow researchers to explore a vast range of conditions in a fraction of the time required by conventional methods. Implementing high-throughput workflows not only increases efficiency but also enhances reproducibility and process understanding, leading to faster process optimization, more efficient media formulation and robust bioprocess control strategies—paving the way for efficient and cost-effective bioprocesses.
As the global demand for sustainable and economically viable bio-production increases, high-throughput strategies represent a critical tool for meeting the growing demand for innovation in biotechnology.

Debottlenecking in scalable algae cultivation with innovative technologies
Timo Gehring
Professor of Bio- and Environmental Engineering | htw saar - university of applied sciences
Dr. Gehring will walk you through the challenges of future large scale algae cultivation processes and highlighting where innovative analytical technology and high-throughput-screening can play a crucial role in overcoming bottlenecks, improving efficiency, ensuring predictive process performance and optimize production rates.

Driving Enzyme Innovation in Bakery: Leveraging High-Throughput Technologies
María Carmen Álvarez
Research Manager | Puratos
A comprehensive journey of enzyme development for the bakery industry will be examined, from the initial concept to large-scale production. The role of high-throughput microbioreactors in accelerating and transforming the process will be highlighted. This approach ensures high-quality enzyme development and a seamless transition to production, significantly reducing development time. As a result, products can be brought to market faster, market demands can be met more effectively, and continuous innovation in the bakery sector can be driven.

The approach to innovation has been reinvented itself again and again. Particularly in the field of bioeconomy there seems to be no straight forward approach to successful commercialization – the feedstocks are complex, the products manifold, the market drivers unstable, investment needs big and risks high. We want to shed light on the various approaches to research and development and discuss:
- some best practices on specific examples from the areas of industrial biotechnology and bioinspired chemistry
- what’s best outsourced and what should you do in-house
- good examples for open innovation
- how should the interface look like between research and commercialization

BIOTRANSFORM is an initiative dedicated to accelerating the shift from linear, fossil-based systems to circular, bio-based models. These are the key highlights of BIOTRANSFORM:
- Demonstrating innovative circular bioeconomy pathways tailored to regional contexts of six European case studies in Andalusia (Spain), Northern Burgenland (Austria), Western Macedonia (Greece), Finland, Charles Spa Region (Czech Republic), and North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany), following a new circular bioeconomy transformation methodology.
- Delivering actionable insights through roadmaps and tools for policymakers, industry leaders, and communities to adopt circular bioeconomy practices.
- Offering cutting-edge governance models with practical solutions to overcome institutional barriers and foster collaboration across sectors.
Our proposed event will provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the project’s achievements, actionable outcomes, and future potential. With BIOKET’s focus on bioeconomy technologies and innovation, this collaboration is a perfect match to showcase how BIOTRANSFORM bridges science and practice to create impactful solutions for Europe’s green transition.
